
Theta Pavis is a poet, editor and educator living in Jersey City, NJ. Her first chapbook, The Red Strobe, will be published in 2025. Her writing has appeared in The Journal of New Jersey Poets, The Red Wheelbarrow, Mom Egg Review, Spillwords Press, Why to These Rocks: 50 Years of Poetry from the Community of Writers (HeyDay Books) and many others. A collection of her poems was shortlisted in 2022 by Yellow Arrow Publishing. Her poems have also been performed onstage by Poetry Well in New York.
An award-winning journalist, she worked for daily newspapers in Pennsylvania, New York and New Jersey. She was the founding editor of Palisade magazine. As a freelancer she wrote for numerous outlets, including Wired, New York Family and Discover magazine. As a media specialist she helped nonprofits tell their stories, including working with Sociologists for Women in Society.
In 2021, the Society of Professional Journalists (NJ chapter) named her “Journalism Educator of the Year.” For nearly a decade she was the director of Student Media at New Jersey City University and volunteered with the College Media Association. She has also taught journalism, creative writing and public speaking at Kean University, UCLA, the University of the Arts, St. Peter’s University and Rutgers-Newark.
She’s received residencies from Arts By The People (New Jersey) and the Bethany Arts Center (New York). The Community of Writers workshop (California) recently awarded her a scholarship. Theta graduated from UCLA and has a master’s from Columbia University’s Graduate School of Journalism.
